Colorano American Revolution Bi-Centennial Series Collection – BC #26 - Dunmore Defeated at Great Bridge – December 11, 1775 – Governor Dunmore (VA) placed his colony under martial law, established a base at Norfolk and began recruiting a Loyalist army. By offering freedom to those slaves who deserted their masters he recruited a Negro regiment. On December 11th Governor Dunmore’s force was decisively defeated by a mixed force of 900 Virginians and North Carolinians at Great Bridge. Norfolk was evacuated but on January 1st Dunmore landed their again and destroyed much of the town by fire.

On the 200th Anniversary of the American Revolution, Colorano produced a remarkable collection of commemorative covers marking the events leading up to the independence of our great country. This monumental eleven year project (1973 through 1984) opens with the Boston Tea party in 1773 and concludes with the Treaty of Paris in 1784 formally ending the Revolutionary War and establishing the United States as a sovereign nation. Each cover is postmarked at an appropriate location on the anniversary date of the event commemorated.
