Product Overview
Vintage Original America Fiue India Nova Michael Mercator Framed And Matted
Product Highlights:
- Framed and matted sheet map
- Map is 19 inches in length and 15.5 inches in height
- Frame is 25.75 inches in length and 22.25 inches in height
- Although the glass on the frame is missing a chunk on the upper right hand corner the frame still protects the sheet map from further damage.
- This map was created by Michael Mercator, grandson of the great Gerard Mercator. It is the only map attributed to him.
The map first appeared in 1595, one year after the great cartographer’s death in the atlas published by his son Rumold. The general outline of the map was taken from Rumold Mercator’s world map of 1587. Some of these unique views were incorporated – such as the mystical islands of the North Atlantic (St. Brendan), the bulge on the west coast of South America, and the inland lake of fresh water in Canada. Small rounded inset maps contain the title, Cuba, Hispaniola and the Gulf of Mexico. North and South America are shown above a large southern continent. The Pacific stretches to the west, with a large, round New Guinea at the edge of the hemisphere. To the north, three of the four islands Gerard Mercator typically placed around the North Pole are visible. This is an early Latin text example.
This antique map was never pasted and has no text on the back. It is in very good antique condition with normal ware as pictured. There are four insets in the corners, along with decorative scrollwork that again showcases Michael's engraving prowess. In the upper left is the Gulf of Mexico, the upper right Cuba, the lower left Haiti (nunc Hispaniola), and the lower right, a title. Although Gerard Mercator is mentioned in the title, Michael is identified as the engraver and Duisberg as the place where he executed the work.
- The original purchaser added a note to the back of the frame: "America. Published in 1597 by Michael Mercator. I believe that Michael was the son (Rumold) of Geradus Mercator (1512 to 1594) and was one of the regional maps begun by Mercator finished by his son after his death, and included in Mercator's Atlas. Mercator was one of the leading map makers of the world (inventor of Mercator's projection with parallels and meridians at right angles). He freed geography from the tyranny of Ptolemy. His maps of better known countries are fairly accurate but fail lamentably in regions of imperfect information. Originally engraved on copper. G. Mercator lived in Druisberg. In his early life he was arrested for heresy.
